During the year students will learn to read while working on fluency and comprehension skills.
Some comprehension skills we will address are predicting, visualizing,
generalizing, sequencing, author’s purpose, character, cause and effect, main
idea and supporting details, context clues, graphic sources, steps in a
process, fact and opinion, theme, reality vs. fantasy, drawing conclusions and
plot structure.
ü
Children will periodically be given a formal
reading test called a running record. The goal is to have children
reading at their instructional level as much as possible. Children’s
report card scores will be a reflection of their reading level. Below are
listed the goals for your child's reading level for the end of each quarter.
Quarter 1: Level D
Quarter 2: Level F
Quarter 3: Level G
Quarter 4: Level I
ü
We will be learning a variety of grammar topics also. The
children will learn how to write a complete sentence using correct sentence
structure. This will include correct use of upper case letters and
punctuation marks. We will also learn about nouns, verbs and adjectives.
ü
Students will also work on paragraph writing. They will be
responsible for a 5 sentence paragraph, including a topic sentence, 3 proof
sentences and a feeling/conclusion sentence.
